You Don’t Experience Reality…You Experience Your Interpretation of Reality.
How to Rewrite the Stories That Shape Your Life
Most of the pain we feel in relationships comes from the meaning we attach to moments, not the moments themselves. A tone becomes rejection. A pause becomes disapproval. A forgotten text becomes abandonment. A disagreement becomes a sign that we are not enough.
We suffer from the interpretation, the meaning we give the event, not the event itself.
When I learned the Meta Model, I realized that almost everything I believed about myself and others was shaped by distortions, deletions, and generalizations.
These patterns were learned. They were automatic. They were flexible.
Once I saw that, I understood that I could change them.
This is where healing begins.
We Don’t See Reality. We See Through Filters.
The mind is always trying to make sense of what happens. Instead of seeing clearly, we interpret through past experiences, fears, assumptions, and emotional states. These interpretations feel true, but they are often inaccurate.
Therapeutic questioning helps us separate what happened from what we added.
What Therapeutic Questioning Is
Therapeutic questioning is the practice of asking precise questions that bring someone back to clarity. It helps them see where their thinking has drifted away from reality. It reveals the assumptions that create emotional pain. It brings awareness to the meaning they added without realizing it.
It guides someone back to themselves.
It is the moment they realize that the story they are reacting to is one they created. And if they created it, they can change it.
The Three Ways We Distort Reality
Distortions, Generalizations, Deletions
These patterns shape every belief, every conflict, and every emotional reaction.
As you read, answer the questions.
This is where the shift happens.
1. Distortions
Distortions happen when we add meaning that is not actually present.
Mind Reading
Examples: They do not like me, He is upset with me
Ask yourself: How do I know that is true? What evidence do I have? What else could be true?
Cause and Effect
Examples: You make me feel this way, She ruined my day
Ask yourself: How did that create this feeling? What interpretation did I add? What part of this reaction came from me?
Complex Equivalence
Examples: She did not text back, so she does not care. He raised his voice, so he is disrespectful.
Ask yourself: How does that event equal that meaning? Have I ever done something similar and still cared?
2. Generalizations
Generalizations turn one moment into a rule.
Universal Quantifiers
Examples: She never listens, I always mess things up
Ask yourself: Never? Where is the exception? What would happen if this was not true?
Modal Operators
Examples: I have to, I cannot, I should, I should not
Ask yourself: What would happen if I did? What is actually preventing me? Who decided this rule?
3. Deletions
Deletions remove important information and create confusion.
Simple Deletions
Examples: I am uncomfortable, I feel off
Ask yourself: About what? What specifically triggered this?
Unspecified Verbs
Examples: He rejected me, She attacked me
Ask yourself: How specifically? What did they actually do? What meaning did I add?
Comparative Deletions
Examples: She is better than me, I am not good enough
Ask yourself: Better than whom? Compared to what? Better at what?
The Moment Everything Changes
Here is the truth that shifts everything.
You do not experience people. You experience your interpretation of people.
You do not experience events. You experience the meaning you attach to events.
You do not experience the world. You experience your model of the world.
Your model is flexible. It can evolve. It can change.
You story can be rewritten.
This is the beginning of creator consciousness.
One Question That Can Change Your Life
The next time you feel hurt or overwhelmed, ask:
What meaning did I add here?
Then ask:
What else could this mean?
This single shift can dissolve conflict, reduce emotional intensity, and open space for connection.
You Are Not at the Mercy of Your Thoughts
You are the one creating them.
Once you see that, you can create meaning that supports you. Meaning that brings clarity. Meaning that strengthens your relationships. Meaning that aligns with who you are becoming.
This is the heart of therapeutic questioning. This is the gift of the Meta Model.
This is the beginning of a new way of relating to your inner world.
