The Empowerment Formula: From Effect to Cause

Every transformation has a beginning.

It isn’t always the moment someone sets a goal, creates a plan, or imagines the life they want.

Sometimes, it begins with something much more fundamental.

It is the moment we begin to shift from living at effect to living at cause.

In NLP, this is part of what we call the Empowerment Formula, and it is a foundational concept in creating meaningful change.

Sometimes, a woman can want change deeply and still be unable to imagine what that change could look like.

She may want relief.

She may want direction.

She may want something in her life to feel different.

But when she is asked what she actually wants, nothing comes to mind.

When she is asked whether she believes things could be different, she can’t see how.

This doesn’t necessarily mean she doesn’t want change.

Sometimes, we have been living with stress, disappointment, responsibility, or discouragement for so long that we can no longer see a path forward.

The future becomes difficult to imagine.

Possibility itself becomes difficult to access.

And when we can’t see what could be different, it becomes very easy to believe that change has to come from somewhere outside of us.

A miracle.

A stroke of luck.

Winning the lottery.

Someone else changing.

Something happening outside of our control that finally gives us the freedom we haven’t been able to create for ourselves.

This is where our sense of agency can begin to shrink.

And when our sense of agency gets smaller, our ability to imagine a different future can become smaller too.

The mind stops asking:

“What could I create?”

And starts saying:

“Nothing will ever change, so why bother trying?”

And this is where the Empowerment Formula becomes so important.

What Is the Empowerment Formula?

The Empowerment Formula is based on a simple, but powerful, distinction:

Are you living at effect, or are you living at cause?

Living at effect means experiencing life as though your circumstances, other people, or outside events are determining what is possible for you.

Living at cause means recognizing where you have influence.

It does not mean you control everything that happens.

You don’t.

Life can bring loss, disappointment, difficult relationships, financial challenges, illness, unexpected changes, and circumstances you never would have chosen.

Living at cause isn’t about pretending those things don’t matter.

It is about asking:

“Given what is happening, what is within my influence?”

That question creates a different starting point.

What Does Living at Effect Look Like?

When someone is living at effect, their circumstances can begin to feel like a closed door.

Their internal dialogue might sound like:

“Nothing is going to change.”

“This is just the way my life is.”

“If I had more money, I could finally be free.”

“If my relationship changed, everything would be better.”

“There are no opportunities for me.”

“I can’t change.”

“There is nothing I can do.”

There may be very real reasons behind these thoughts.

Perhaps someone has been carrying responsibilities for years.

Perhaps they have experienced repeated disappointment.

Perhaps they have spent so much time trying to keep everything together that they have stopped imagining what life could look like beyond their current circumstances.

Eventually, the outside world can begin to feel like the only thing capable of changing their experience.

If something outside of them changes, they can feel better.

If it doesn’t, they feel stuck.

This can create an exhausting cycle:

My circumstances determine how I feel.
How I feel determines what I believe is possible.
What I believe is possible determines what I do.

And what I do reinforces the life I’m already living.

The Shift From Effect to Cause

Moving from effect to cause begins with recognizing your own influence.

That might sound simple, but it can be a profound shift.

Instead of asking:

“Why is this happening to me?”

You begin asking:

“What can I do with what is happening?”

Instead of:

“Why won’t they change?”

You begin asking:

“What choice do I have here?”

Instead of:

“I can’t change my life.”

You begin asking:

“What is one thing I could change?”

You don’t need to have the entire answer.

You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going.

You don’t even have to feel confident in the how yet.

You simply need to begin recognizing that there may be choices available to you that you cannot see yet.

That is where possibility begins to return.

When You Can’t Even Answer “What Do You Want?”

This is one of the reasons I believe clarity work is often deeper than simply making a list of goals.

Sometimes a woman comes to me because she wants clarity.

She wants to know what she wants.

She wants direction.

She wants to feel excited about her future again.

But when she tries to imagine what she actually wants, she draws a blank.

Sometimes, what she wants feels so far away from what she is currently experiencing that she can’t see a path between the two.

She may know she wants more freedom.

She may know she wants her life to feel different.

She may even be able to imagine a completely different set of circumstances that would make that possible.

But if the only way she can see those circumstances changing is through something outside of her control, it can be difficult to imagine creating change from where she is.

Winning the lottery is an obvious example.

The money could represent freedom, travel, fewer responsibilities, and the ability to live differently.

But the deeper question is:

What happens when we believe freedom can only come from something outside of us changing?

This is where the distinction between living at effect and living at cause becomes so important.

Because you cannot always create a compelling vision from a place where you cannot yet imagine possibility.

Sometimes the first work is not creating the five year vision.

Sometimes the first work is discovering why you cannot see one…

Why Vision Work Can Feel Impossible

Vision boards, goal setting, future-self exercises, journaling, and visualization can be incredibly powerful.

But they are not always the first step.

If you feel overwhelmed, depleted, discouraged, or trapped in your current circumstances, being told to “just imagine your dream life” can feel almost impossible.

What are you supposed to visualize when you genuinely don’t know what you want?

What future are you supposed to connect with when your present feels like something you cannot escape?

This is where I think we need to approach personal transformation differently.

We don’t need to force an answer.

We can become curious about what is underneath the absence of an answer.

What has made it difficult to imagine something different?

What beliefs are shaping the way you see your options?

What have you decided is impossible?

Where have you handed your power over to circumstances, other people, or the hope that something external will change?

And perhaps most importantly:

What might become possible if you began to believe that you have more influence than you thought?

Sometimes the First Shift Is Very Small

When creating a future vision feels impossible, sometimes the first step is much more immediate.

A moment of calm.

A different experience in the body.

A chance to experience something other than the frustration, overwhelm, or limitation we’ve been carrying.

Sometimes that can be enough to create a small opening.

Because when we experience a different internal state, even for a moment, we are reminded that our current experience isn’t the only experience available to us.

It doesn’t have to be a giant breakthrough.

It doesn’t suddenly solve everything in our lives.

But something can shift.

And that matters.

Because sometimes the first experience of possibility isn’t a detailed vision of the future.

Sometimes it is simply experiencing something different than what you’ve been experiencing.

A different feeling.

A different thought.

A different response.

A moment where your body experiences another state and begins to recognize that it is available to you.

From there, you can begin to become curious.

What else might be possible?

From Possibility to Personal Transformation

This is where personal transformation becomes much more interesting to me.

We often think change starts with knowing exactly what we want.

But sometimes it starts with realizing that what you’re experiencing right now isn’t the only experience available to you.

Then you can begin exploring the beliefs, emotional patterns, behaviours, and subconscious programming that have been shaping your choices.

This is where the work I do with women can include NLP, hypnotherapy, EFT, coaching, spiritual counselling, therapeutic questioning, visualization, and other tools.

The goal isn’t to give someone a vision for their life.

It is to help them explore what is already there, what has been getting in the way, and what might become possible when they begin relating to themselves and their circumstances differently.

Because your future doesn’t have to be a perfect picture.

You don’t have to know exactly what the next five years will look like.

You can start with one question:

What if there is another possibility I haven’t been able to see yet?

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

If you are feeling stuck right now, you may be tempted to believe that you need clarity before you can move forward.

But sometimes, clarity is what develops through the process of exploring.

You may know that you don’t want your life to continue looking the way it does.

That is information.

You may know that you want more freedom.

That is information.

You may know that you want deeper relationships, more purpose, more joy, greater financial independence, a stronger connection with yourself, or simply to feel different inside your own life.

That is information too.

You don’t need to turn it into a perfect vision immediately.

Start there.

Get curious.

Ask better questions.

Look at where you have influence.

Notice the places where you have been waiting for something outside of yourself to change before giving yourself permission to move.

And then ask:

“What is actually within my power here?”

That is a very different question.

And sometimes, it is the question that begins to change everything.

The Beginning of Your Own Shift

I don’t believe transformation happens because we suddenly become completely confident, motivated, or certain about the future.

I believe it often begins much earlier.

It begins when we become willing to consider another possibility.

When we recognize that our circumstances are not the entirety of our story.

When we begin to question the beliefs that have been shaping our choices.

When we reclaim a little bit of our agency.

When we move from:

“This is happening to me.”

toward:

“What can I do from here?”

That is the shift from effect to cause.

And that is where the Empowerment Formula becomes powerful.

You may not be able to control everything that happens in your life.

But there is more within your influence than you may realize…

And sometimes, the first step toward creating a different life isn’t knowing exactly what that life looks like.

It is becoming willing to believe that something different is possible.

Ready to Explore What’s Possible?

If you know there is more available to you but you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unclear about what comes next, a Vision & Clarity Session can be a place to begin.

You don’t need to arrive with a five year plan.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want.

You simply need to be willing to explore what might be possible.

Let’s connect.
